Onion Bread

This onion bread recipe is SO easy. No kneading or complicated bread making techniques. It doesn't even need time to rise. Simply mix the ingredients and pop it in the oven. Perfect for last minute bread. Perfect for a braai or lunch time with cheese and pickles. Perfect in the evening served with soup.

And did I mention it only has 3 ingredients?

This bread has been a staple at many of our family gatherings and I can remember as a child fighting over who was going to get the end crispy crust piece.

Onion Bread

  • 500g self raising flour (one small bag, I buy the small 500g packets and keep them in the cupboard - don't even need to measure the flour out!)
  • 500ml buttermilk or maas (I've also used yogurt when it's all I've had and it works perfectly too)
  • 1 packet brown onion or white onion soup powder (we love both)

Pre-heat your oven to 180 C (165 fan). Tip your flour into a mixing bowl along with the packet of onion soup powder. Mix them together. Add your buttermilk/maas/yogurt and combine. Don't overmix just make sure everything is combined and then place mixture into a greased bread/loaf tin. You can add a few onion slices to the top of the dough for decoration if you have any spare onion or plan on chopping some. Just lightly press it onto the surface before baking.

Pop into the oven for 35-40 minutes depending on your oven. Test if the bread is read by piercing it right the way through with a skewer stick. If the stick comes out clean (no dough attached) then the bread is ready.

Cool on a wire wrack. Best eaten on the day of baking but it does make a delicious toast for your breakfast the next day...that is if you have any left at all.
