Homemade Baked Beans

Are you a baked beans fan? Beans are a great source of fibre (something most of us don't get enough of) and protein. They contain amino acids which help to renew and restore many parts of our body. They are just SO good for you...BUT...traditional baked beans in a can are so high in sodium and particularly sugar. Not the beans but the sauce they are seeped in. So use our Basic Tomato Sauce Recipe for the most delicious tomato beans (baked beans) and you will never want to eat the tinned stuff again. If you are not a baked beans fan, maybe this recipe will change your mind.

Homemade Baked Beans

  • 1 small onion finely chopped

  • 1 T worcestershire sauce

  • 1 cup Basic Tomato Sauce (see recipe here)

  • 1 tin of cannelloni beans (you could use butter beans or kidney beans or your own choice of beans)

  • handful of fresh herbs finely chopped (coriander or parsley or basil)

  • chilli (optional) if you like it hot add a bit of sliced chilli to the onions

- Gently fry the finely chopped onion until soft and transparent. Stir in a tablespoon of worcestershire sauce, this gives a touch of sweetness and umami to the beans.

- Stir in 1 cup of basic tomato sauce, the recipe for this can be found in our blog and is a great staple for the fridge for many quick meals. Heat the sauce through, drain the liquid off the beans and rinse them* and then add the tin of beans to the sauce and stir until heated through.

- Remove from the heat and stir in some fresh herbs.

These beans are great served as a side with salad, they are a great protein packed breakfast served on a slice of sourdough or serve them with some baby spinach or sliced avocado on top.

* Rinsing the beans under water to remove the brine will decrease the chance of the beans causing extra gas and removes any extra sodium that may have been in the brine.
